Manipur Violence: Official Report Says 1693 Meitei Religious Structures Gutted Down

1693 Meitei religious structures/temples and 1680 Meitei houses have been gutted down in the ongoing ethnic conflict in Manipur, Official sources said as per FIRs filed in different Police Stations in Imphal.

However, the numbers might increase as reports of more arson are awaited. Sources reported on Sunday of fresh arson of many Meitei houses in Serou including the house of the present MLA Kangujam Ranjit of Suganu AC.

According to an official source, the number of injured reaches 310 and recorded cases of arson reaches 4,014 on both sides. As many as 144 stolen arms have been recovered along with 11 magazines. The recovered arms include 29 Self-Loading Rifles (SLR), 15 carbines, 12 INSAS rifles and 10 grenade launchers among others, the report furthered.

Further, the source stated that as many as 3,734 FIRs have been registered, the maximum being in Imphal West district at 1,257, followed by Kangpokpi (932) and Bishnupur (844).

While the curfew has been relaxed in most districts, shootouts between the armed Kuki militants and combined forces have been reported in Sugnu and Serou on Saturday and Sunday.

Heavy exchange of fire occurred in Imphal West district’s Phayeng village on Friday too after Kuki armed miscreants set houses on fire.
