While answering the star question "Whether the state goes bankrupt in purchasing power from outside the state,"- MLA K. Meghachandra asked on behalf of Congress MLA A. Ranjit at the 3rd Session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly Session, Power Minister Th. Bishworjit said that Manipur would be self-reliant on power supply in two years.
Speaking on the present situation of power in the state, the power minister said that procedures for the establishment of a new mini-hydro project to produce 300 megawatts of electricity are almost complete. With 90 percent of its funding shared by the centre and also with the World Bank to extend financial support to the state, the state will be able to produce its own electricity.
The Minister furthered that since the installation of the electric grid lines around the heart of Imphal city is complete, there would be no load shedding in the state as the state can buy electricity from various parts of India.
Besides the supplies from the Eastern grid, electricity can also be obtained from the grid lines, 400 kb line, 132 kb line, and 133 kb lines.
Adding further to his answer to the present situation of electricity in the hill districts, the power minister said that 2,20,000 families in the districts have new prepaid electricity connections. Of the total 5,20,000 consumers in the hill districts, 4,64,000 consumers have installed prepaid connections.
Except for the rainy seasons, we can produce only 70/80 watts of power in other seasons. And we are compelled to buy electricity as costly as Rs.10 to Rs. 13 per unit from the open market to meet our daily consumption. We face a lot of problems out of this. However, since revenue from electricity has been increased, the total deficit has reduced from a whopping 130/140 crores to 65 crores only. Once the due is cleared, the state would be relieved of the huge burden due to electricity, added the Power Minister.
