Bijoy Kakchingtabam, Associate Editor, Poknapham, was appointed as the President of the All Manipur Journalists Working Union on Monday for three years from 2023-2025. He scored 100 more votes than his opponent Wangkhemcha Shyamjai of Sanaleipak.
The newly elected President scored 204 votes while his rival scored only 104.
An eight members standing committee was also formed at the Press Club, Imphal, on the same day. Ten journalists took part in the election of the Standing Committee. The elected members of the standing committee are N. Jiten of Sangai Express, M. Khagemba of Sanaleibak, S. Sonia of Poknapham, Ng. Sanjoy of ISTV, Kh. Nabakumar of Tom TV, B. Sanjoy of Panthung, N. Raju of Impact TV, and A. Priyo of Morning Bell.
Returning Officer Advocate Meihoubam Rakesh handed over the certificates to the winning journalists including Bijoy Kakchingtabam, the President.
Speaking on the occasion, Bijoy Kakchingtabam, the newly elected President, said that every journalist must leave narrow partial ideas in them and work for the betterment of society. The new President also talked of establishing a Journalist Colony in Lamphel and availing media personnel from far-flung areas to stay on rent. He also talked about introducing a pension and voluntary retirement system for journalists in the state. Further, he said that he is planning to organize a trip, especially for women journalists, to Mount Manipur in Andaman and Nicobar.
