Rewben Mashangva was conferred with the prestigious Padma Shri Award by President Ram Nath Kovind.
Rewben Mashangva, also known as Guru Rewben Mashangva (born on June 21, 1961) is a folk musician and singer from Manipur. He is known for reviving the musical tradition of the Tangkhul Naga of Manipur, and use of traditional musical instruments in his songs. The Government of India honored him this year, with the award of Padma Shri, the fourth highest Indian civilian award for his rich contribution to art.
Guru is a celebrated folk musician of Manipur who has been devoting and contributing his entire life to the development of the Folk Music of Naga.
An indigenous Tangkhul Naga background from Choithar a remote village in the Ukhrul district of Manipur, North-East India, Rewben Mashangva becomes one of the most popular and respected Naga musicians of the country. He is hailed as ‘King of Naga Folk Blues’ while some journalists named him ‘cultural ambassador of the Nagas’.
Guru is also a researcher of folk music of the tribes in North East India and presently serves as Director and teaches music at Naga Folk Music Academy. He is also a manufacturer of the traditional folk musical instruments of the Naga.
Guru plays the guitar producing an ethnic folk sound which is very unique, comprising of the mouth organ, the four-hole flute known as Yangkahui, the Tingteilla (folk fiddle) & his rare cowbell percussion. He has reinvented the traditional Tangkhul Naga flute Yangkahui which is getting ready to be patented and also modified and polished the folk fiddle to suit the western tonal scale.
Guru’s prominent trademark is his ‘Haokuirat’ (the traditional hairstyle of the primitive Nagas) and the colorful traditional outfit which he wears wherever he performs. His presentation is something that the Nagas had never heard and seen before.
He is also the winner of the State Kala Akademi Award 2005 and recipient of the honorary title ‘Guru’ from the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.
