The Southern Angami Public Organization (SAPO) announced through a press release to lift the restriction imposed on Mao Community within its jurisdiction, with effect from 21st March 2023. The announcement came a few days after the Angami Public Organization advised SAPO on the matter.

After an “APO Extra-ordinary Meeting “held on 17th March 2023, with its Executive Members, Presidents of all Frontal Organizations, Advisory Board Members, and Intellectuals, the Angami Public Organization (APO) resolved to take over the contentious SAPO matter at hand.

It may be recalled that SAPO imposed restrictions on the MAO Community within its jurisdiction to protest the unfair occupation of the Manipur Government’s Armed Forces and imposition of CrPC 144 within the heart of Kezoltsa which is currently in dispute.

The restriction on the Mao Community was imposed from midnight of 15th December 2022 and continued till 20th March 2023. The interference of the Manipur Government, conniving with the Mao Council, was reacted in distaste as traditional lands straddling each other’s arbitrarily drawn political boundaries.

However, SAPO never objected to Manipur Government holding its Cherry Blossom Festival, the establishment of a Manipur Government School or other Manipur Government Funded projects and developments carried out at Okhro Ikhro which traditionally belongs to Mao Community though it is in Nagaland technically.

The magnanimity of the government of Nagaland is also appreciated for awarding 16 Nagaland Government jobs to Mao traditional landowners at T.B. Hospital Khuzama, Nagaland, respecting traditional landowners and other privileges extended to the community based on brotherhood, despite Article 371(A) strictures. It looks forward to resolving the existing land dispute traditionally.

SAPO functionaries also met with the Chief Minister of Nagaland, and are grateful for his concern about the issue. SAPO reiterates that redrawing the political boundary of Nagaland or Manipur is not its agenda.

The move by SAPO comes after the Supreme Court of India directed the Union of India to look into a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed in connection with the current blockade on the Mao Community of Manipur by Khurajam Athouba, current Convener of the Mao-Imphal Market Co-Ordination Committee and Vice President, IPSA.
