State Government’s initiative for peace talks turned ugly at Sugnu Bazar as the mob there detained four of the five elected members of the Manipur Legislative Assembly on Saturday at Sugnu Mahila Congress Building at Sugnu Bazar.

The four MLAs detained at Sugnu Bazar are

  1. Usham Deben, MLA Hiyanglam AC (BJP)
  2. Radheshyam of Wabagai AC (BJP)
  3. Rameshwar of Kakching AC (BJP)
  4. Ranjit of Sugnu AC (Congress)

However, MAHUD Minister Yumnam Khemchand sneaked away the large mob with the promise to strongly urge the Chief Minister the wishes of the mob. The mob numbering thousands demanded the complete removal of the Assam Rifles based at Sugnu Nazarat following their alleged involvement in shooting some Meitei Civilians during the gun battle between the heavily armed KUKI Militants and the Meiteis. The mob also questioned the recent incident of blocking the gateway of Sugnu Police Station and that of the SDPO on Friday, the 2nd of June 2023.

The team of elected members headed by MAHUD Minister Y. Khemchand arrived at Sugnu Bazar in the afternoon. However, when the peace talk began, the mob directly turned down the proposal of any form of peace talk until the agreement of SoO with the KUKI Militants is withdrawn. The huge mob said there is no room for peace talks many of their brothers, fathers, uncles, and friends have been killed and injured by the armed KUKI Militants.

The mob also demanded the Minister and the other MLAs to remove the Assam Rifles from the soil of Sugnu and Mother Manipur. At the heavy pressure of the huge mob, Minister Khemchand called Chief Minister N. Biren Singh and confided him the wishes and demands of the people. The CM said the removal process will take time and need a proper channel to start. Mr. Biren Singh invited some of the able leaders from the mob to form a committee, visit him and discuss the possible way out.

Turning down the suggestion of the CM, the mob said Minister Khemchand to go and meet the CM and present their demands. However, they said the other four MLAS will spend the night there at Sugnu Bazar and experience what the locals face every day and night till a solution is worked out from the government's side.

Later, some mobs pushed the vehicles of the MLAs and their respective security personnel to a playground nearby and abandoned them there.

When our correspondent asked if the crowd detained them, MLA K. Ranjit said they came there only to spend the night there and experience the plight of the locals.

Earlier, thousands of women from Sugnu, Langmeidong, Wabagai, Kakching, Panghantabi, and others marched a peaceful protest and demanded the permanent removal of Assam Rifles from Suganu.

The women alleged that the Assam Rifles are with the Kuki Militants and many Meitei Civilians got killed and injured in their hands.
