Victims of Waithou Eviction Stage Sit-in-Protest against Government
Thoubal, 9th August 2022: Victims of Waithou Eviction staged a sit-in protest on Monday against the non-extension of any help from the side of the government since day 1 of eviction.
Naorem Ibemcha, Secretary - Meira Paibi Apunba Lup, said during the sit-in-protest that Meitei and Meitei Pangal from around the Waithou Ching was evicted on June 12 on the ground of illegal encroachment. It rendered many families homeless. They have been taking shelter at Lilong Haoreibi College. But no aid of any sort has been received from the side of the government so far. The victims condemned the indifference of the government. And so, they organized the sit-in-protest.
The Secretary furthered that they have submitted a memorandum containing a charter of demands. But no positive response from the side of the government has been received. She also urged the authorities concerned to feasibly arrange a permanent shelter for them and provide means of their livelihood.
Speaking further, she went on to criticize the government's failure to implement housing for the homeless. She then appealed to the government to implement all the promises and work out a solution.
On 12th June 2022, the Divisional Forest Office, Thoubal, and District Administration Thoubal destroyed houses and buildings of 69 families during the eviction drive at Waithou Sangomshang.
