Water scarcity problem in Imphal Valley is an impact of massive deforestation in both hills and plains: MLA Okram Surjakumar
Thoubal, March 22- As part of the worldwide observation, World Water Day was observed on Wednesday at Thoubal District. The event was organized by the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) Thoubal Division. In connection with the observation, many tree saplings were planted at the campus of District Hospital Thoubal.
The observation was graced by Khangabok AC MLA Okram Surjakumar Singh as Chief Guest, Executive Officer of PHED Thoubal Division N. Livingstone as Functionary President, and Medical Superintendent of District Hospital Thoubal Dr. W. Ruhinikumar as Guest of Honor.
Addressing the observation MLA Surjakumar expressed the need of realising the importance of tree plantation as a whole, he said that the current water scarcity problem in Imphal Valley is an impact of massive deforestation in both hills and plains. He continued that we must thanks PHED Thoubal Division for tree plantation in connection with World Water Day. MLA Surjakumar later appealed to the general public and Village Water and Sanitation Committee to intensify plantation activities and to be environmentally aware.
Giving the presidential speech, N. Livingstone expressed that rainwater harvesting is very essential to mitigate the water scarcity problem during the lean season and drying up of water sources. He said that the observation is held to sensitize on how to harvest rainwater and the need for tree plantation in maintaining the water cycle and ecological balance.
