23rd Anniversary of the Great June Uprising, Unity Day Observed

The 23rd anniversary of the Great June Uprising, Unity Day, was observed on Tuesday with a solemn event at Kekrupat, Imphal. The event, organized by the Observance Committee for the 23rd Great June Uprising, Unity Day 2024, was scaled down due to ongoing conflict in the state since May 3 of last year.
Participants, including family members of the 18 martyrs, political leaders, student activists, local clubs, and Meira Paibi groups, paid floral tributes at the memorial within the Kekrupat complex. The commemoration honored those who lost their lives during the protests on June 18, 2001, against the inclusion of the words "without territorial limit" in the ceasefire agreement between the Government of India (GoI) and the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Isak-Muivah) [NSCN (I-M)].
The protests erupted when the ceasefire agreement, known as the Bangkok Declaration, signed on June 14, 2001, extended the operational area to neighboring states of Nagaland. On the day of the uprising, 14 protestors were killed by CRPF personnel, with four more dying later due to injuries. The contentious phrase was eventually removed from the agreement on July 27, 2001.
Joychandra Konthoujam, the Chairman of the observance committee, recalled the events leading to the uprising, highlighting the people's resistance against the agreement which was set to be operational from August 1, 2001. He emphasized the enduring impact of the 18 martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the territorial integrity of Manipur, and criticized the GoI for ongoing actions perceived as harmful to the indigenous populations of the state.
Vice-chairman of the observance committee, Pheiroijam Nando Luwang, urged attendees to remember and honor the martyrs' efforts in safeguarding Manipur's territorial integrity. "People should never forget the role taken by the martyrs in trying to protect the territorial integrity of Manipur," he stated.
The subdued yet poignant observance served as a reminder of the enduring spirit of the Great June Uprising and its significance in Manipur’s history.
