The All-Naga Students’ Association Manipur (ANSAM) has condemned burning down of a house and vandalisation of the gate belonging to a Liangmai Naga at Leimakhong Chingmang, Imphal West District on June 18 by suspected Kuki militants.
In a statement, All Naga Students’ Association Manipur information and publicity cell, reminded that Nagas have been urging all the ethnic communities to refrain from any kind of violence so as to prevent further escalation of the prevailing situation and it along United Naga Council (UNC) working committee, Naga Women Union (NWU) and Liangmai Naga Council had visited the spot for enquiry on June 21, 2023.
It said the joint team witnessed burnt house and vandalised gates belonging to Liangmai Naga at Leimakhong, where they also interacted with Liangmai leaders and the victims.
All Naga Students’ Association Manipur said the team was informed that incident was “purely intentional” as every Naga house in the Leimakhong area had tagged as “Naga”, but claimed that the suspected militants set the house abalze but not touching neighbouring houses belonging to the Kuki community.
Describing the incident as “murderous and appalling”, ANSAM vehemently condemned the “intentional torching and vandalism” of houses and gates belonging to Nagas.
ANSAM also cited other incidents against the Naga community, which it termed as “unfortunate” such as setting ablaze a Rongmei Naga church, assault on Tangkhul Naga women in a broad daylight by unruly mobs; the beating of a Rongmei lady, almost to the point of death at her home at Tumnoupokpl village; physical assault on Zeliangrong boys at Imphal, attacks and beating of three medical employees belonging to a Maring, Mayon and Anal Naga working at Chandel district hospital while on their way to Hospital at Kakching Lamkhal and many incidents, but where Nagas have not retaliated.
The association has urged all the parties involved in the present prevailing situation to refrain from attacking and dragging the Nagas into the conflict between the two ethnic communities in future. ANSAM further cautioned that it would not remain a silent observer if more Nagas were harmed.
