Apunba Meira Paibis Recieving the Meitei Workers at Sugnu Police Station
17th AR at Joupi and 37th AR at Monpi sent ten Meiteis safe at Sugnu on Friday and handed them over to Apunba Meira Paibis through the SDPO of Sugnu Police Station.
The ten Meiteis have been working for the last two and half months in the said AR camps. And they stayed there at the camps for a long time since they couldn’t come down to the valley because of the ongoing clashes.
The persons whom the AR brought home are
One from Kakching, two from Toubungkhok, two from Yurenjam, and five others from Khangabok. The first batch of workers were brought at Sugnu Police Station around 11.30 am and the second batch around 3.30 pm.
As per the workers, they came to work at the AR Camps under the contractor Longjam Kiranjoy. The contractor made two groups consisting of 5 workers each and were made to work at 17th AR camp at Joupi. The reached there at 29th March and began working there. One of the two teams completed their work early and shifted to 37th AR at Monpi for more work. However, as the crisis escalated, they had but to stay at the respective camps.
A day or two after the ill-fated May 3 incident occurred, Kuki Villagers and armed Kuki Militants stormed at the gate of 37th Assam Rifles at Monpi and shouted to handover the five Meitei workers to them. Among the armed Kuki militants, they could see several Lon-gee wearing armed militants.
But the AR personnel there took heavy safety precautions and kept all of them safely at the camp. And they were told to wear AR uniforms and brought safely in Sugnu.
At this kind gesture, the Apunba Meira Paibis expressed their words of appreciation and gratitude to the 37th and 17th Assam Rifles.
