Eighteen Acres of Poppy Plantation Destroyed in Two Days in Kangpokpi District; Two Arrested in the Connection

After a joint team of Kangpokpi District Police, NAB, MR/IRB and Forest Department Kangpokpi, SDM of Lhungtin Sub-Division destroyed poppy cultivation of about 10 acres on Thursday in the hill ranges adjacent to Old Boljang Village, under Lhungtin Sub Division, Kangpokpi District, another eight acres of poppy cultivation was destructed by the joint team on Friday, the 17th March 2023.

As a follow-up, the Police registered an FIR No. 12(2)2023 SKL u/s 18(b) ND&PS in the connection and sent a combined team comprising NAB-PS led by Insp. Sapam Ibomcha Singh, OC NAB-PS, two teams of Imphal East CDO, and a team of Saikul PS conducted a search operation at Old Boljang Village and arrested two individuals namely Ngamginsei Singson (20 years), S/o Mangseih Singson of Theljang Village and Lelen Khongsai (32 years), s/o (L) Pabul Khongsai of Tuibong Bazar A/P from Old Boljang Village.

On spot verification, Ngamginsei Singson revealed that he is actively involved in poppy cultivation along with his brother-in-law Paominlal. Lelen Khongsai also revealed his active involvement in poppy cultivation in the village along with other villagers.

Four Kenbo bikes (Myanmar-made) without registration number, two single barrel guns, and 20.27 kgs. of poppy seeds were seized during the four hours search operation that lasted from 10.30 am to 2.30 pm.

From preliminary investigation, it is evident that the village Chief and other villagers of Old Boljang Village have been indulging in poppy cultivation in the adjoining hill ranges that fall under unclassified forest for the last few years. Efforts are being taken up to arrest the village Chief and others involved in the cultivation, financing, and illicit trade of opium. Most of them including the owners of the Single Barrel guns and kenbo bikes went hiding to escape Police arrest.
