Longmei Area Public Convention Held; Demand to station required Doctors at Noney
The Longmai Area public convention was held on Friday 16th February at Longmai Bazar Shed, Noney Dist. HQ. The public convention was jointly organized by Village Council, Longmai Area, RNCM Longmai Luangrian, RNLP Longmai Luangrian, Naga Women Association Longmai Area, Inpui Naga Women, Longmai Students Union, and various locally based CSOs soliciting the attention of the concerned authorities to different issues of the area.
The different issues starting from the Primary Health Centre Noney and other PHCs of the district which is facing an acute shortage of doctors and staff were discussed deliberately for kind attention from the concerned authorities. Despite the fact, that every PHC in the state is entitled to the minimum requirement of 8 to 9 doctors including one Ayush doctor and one Dental surgeon. However, there is only one doctor posted at Noney PHC, very few nurses, and no lab technician.
Citing the subject, the local-based CSOs had made several attempts to reason with the concerned authorities. Memorandum after memorandum had been submitted, however, there is no positive response from the side of the government. This failure from the side of the govt. is interpreted as the ultimate deprivation of the Fundamental Right entitled to every citizen, the right to life in every civilized society said the women leaders in the convention.
They further questioned how could the poor strength of doctors and staff managed the 24x7 service while they could hardly maintain even a few hours of shift days OPD at the Centre.
Taking these into consideration, the public convention also discussed the general perception of how the system is working in the hill area. They questioned, "How could a responsible government voted to power by the people with much expectation, hope, and trust that justice be delivered at every level, deliberately failed to hear the desperate cry for their basic right to minimum health care service? "
With these, in view, the public convention unanimously resolved to place the following charter of demands.
1. Station all the required doctors and staff at the PHC, Noney within the ultimatum of 4 days i.e. 16th – 19th Feb. 2023.
2. Utilise all the available building infrastructure to deploy doctors and other necessary staff to render service equipment to District Hospital at the earliest.
3. Construct District Hospital at the earliest possible.
Immediately appoint the required number of lab technicians and nurses at the station.
4. Make the life-saving Ambulance Service operational which has remained dormant for a long time.
The public convention also resolved to intensify the demand, especially, point no. 1 of the charter of demand presented, failing which the people shall resort to imposing total bandh, along NH-37 indefinitely, and all the National projects undertaken in the area like the Railway construction work, by the NF Railway and NH-37 expansion work by NHIDCL shall fall under the purview of the bandh.
