Six students organizations, AMSU, MSF, DESAM, KSA, SUK, and AIMS, have sought through a press release on 12th March, the attention of the government to look into the rising problems of state land encroachment and establishment of new villages in the state following the impact of the rapid flow of illegal migrants and immigrants in Manipur.

For the past many years, the group of student unions said that the rapid flow has immensely threatened the existence of the native communities in the state, their livelihood, culture, identities, and political systems. It also has resulted in encroachment upon the reserved forest area indulged in illegal poppy plantations. It also has brought the establishment of new villages and consequently created disorder in society, said the representatives of the student unions.

At this, the group of student unions said that the state government must give immense pressure on the centre to detect, delete and deport illegal immigrants from Nepal, Burma, and Bangladesh. The students’ unions also demanded that the National Register of Citizenship should be made functional in the state.

The student unions implored the government to conduct an eviction drive of the new establishment of villages, houses, and buildings in the reserved forest area of the state, which measures only 1467 km.

In the last few years, illegal immigrants from Myanmar encroached upon reserved forest areas of the state and established new villages taking advantage of similar languages and physical appearances. The unnatural rise in the population settling in hill areas is evident in the illegal occupation and encroachment on reserved forest areas where MLR and LR Act do not apply. The rise in the population of non-Manipuri is a major concern for the native people. At this, the unions stated that the government must enforce and create a Population commission and impose NRC in the state.

The student unions also said that the government should upgrade the forest guards and empower them to take up steps to protect our environment, flora and fauna, the reserved forest area, and the protected reserved forest area of the state. The state must also implement NRC to put a check on the flow of illegal immigrants.
